Dr James Levine, director of the Mayo Clinic at Arizona State University, was the man who coined the phrase: sitting is the new smoking. It turns out that sitting down all day is terrible for your health!
Researchers have found and continue to find evidence that prolonged sitting increases the risk of developing several serious illnesses like various types of cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. It interferes with our lipoprotein lipase, an enzyme that we use to break down fat to use as energy. When it doesn't work well, we store fat. So we need to limit our time on our butts.
So what, now what? Set your phone alarm to go off every hour and get up and stretch, squat or move around. You will be able to concentrate better and find that you have more energy in the late afternoon. Just do it ... even if it's two minutes per hour: set that alarm!
