Health is your Wealth

World Mental Health Day was on 10 October and this year's theme is: 'Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority'.

The Media is full of great articles, and usually I get in 'boots and all' with mental wellbeing tips. But today I feel like distilling this down to a 'micro' habit.

If you're not in the habit of reaching for a cup of tea / coffee as you open your 'peep holes'... maybe there is another personal habit / ritual that you can 're-look'. Many small / micro-habits add up ...to your 'Mental Health'!

I took this picture through a shop window in Dublin at the end of September. I was attending a four- day Conference. There were 200 of us, from 50 countries. More about this in another post.

It was fascinating watching people stumble into the breakfast room and make a mad dash for the coffee station. Many of us were staying in the same hotel in Dublin. On all four mornings … the same ‘four people’ (including me) were in the hotel gym. People didn’t speak about going for an early morning walk … but they spoke about needing that first cup of java !

Here are three quick  ‘wellbeing’ tips:

  1. Get into MOTION: do 15-20 mins of movement in the morning: a walk outside (which is 'first prize') or 20 mins of  stretching / rolling around on the floor with your dog…anything to get fresh oxygenated blood to your brain.
  2. Your first ‘drink of the day’ : have a herbal tea / water & lemon …anything but tea / coffee or green tea.
Why? Your brain is already dehydrated from a night of clearing out the toxins from the previous day.
  3. Delay having your first cup of coffee for about 90 mins after waking.
    Why?
As you wake up ...your body is already producing Cortisol, to get you going for the day. By having your coffee slightly later in the morning, you may not have that 2pm energy slump.

Given that these are ‘quick reads’ … I am not going to go into the research (which also includes delaying your adenosine build-up … which promotes sleep) … but rather encourage all of us to re-look our ‘rituals’.

    Shake them up.
Become more self-aware … HEALTH is your REAL WEALTH!
