Toxic Workplace Behaviour

What are you seeing and / or experiencing in the Workplace?

I am seeing ...

  • destructive competitive behaviour... even 'friends' in teams 'steam rolling' each other to get the 'top job'
  • micro-aggressive behaviour & people demeaning each other
  • subtle, and sometimes overt "exclusion"
  • outbursts of 'inappropriate' anger and the 'blame game'
  • people not being recognised or valued, and shrinking into the shadows

'People who are working in these toxic 'sandpits' (in the workplace) are 8 times more likely to Burnout! According to the McKinsey Health Institute's (MHI) research (15000 people in 15 countries)...

BURNOUT has hit record high levels in the last two years. Instead of giving 'duvet days' or offering gym membership... I am wondering whether we should rather amplify compassionate leadership in the workplace, by being more intentional about EQ competency development! I use the #sixseconds Emotional Intelligence Model of 8 specific competencies (all measurable and teachable) which fall into three dimensions of EQ:

  1. Know Yourself
  2. Choose Yourself and
  3. Give Yourself

If I could wave a magic wand to address worldwide Mental Health issues... I'd be teaching ALL Leaders practical ways in which to become more self-aware, and to boost their levels of EQ! Apparently 4 out of 5 HR leaders have Mental Health, as a primary issue to address in the workplace. I sincerely hope that they are not just adding 'perks' to address the symptoms... but spending more time to get to the ROOT CAUSES in the workplace. The MHI article is a worthy READ.

If you could wave a magic wand... what would you be doing to address this behavioural 'toxicity' in the workplace?
